Olympic Weights, Standard Weights & Dumbbells
Today weights come in many different types, from cast iron, rubber encased, chrome & others. Below is a brief explanation of the different types of weights and dumbbells available on the market today:
Cast Iron (weight plates & Dumbbells) – The original and cheapest form of weights available on the market today. Because cast iron is relatively cheap to produce and readily available the price is pretty inexpensive.
Rubber Hexagonal (dumbbells) – rubber hexagonal weights are normally dumbbells but are available in Olympic & standard weight plates, rubber hex weights are great because they don’t chip and also do not mark flooring. However rubber hex weights are quite expensive compared to cast iron.
Rubber Encased (weight plates) – Rubber encased weights are simply cast iron weights that are covered with rubber, the reason they are covered in rubber is to make them easier to pickup, help avoid cracking of the weights
and also prevent floors from scratching. Rubber encased weights are more expensive compared to cast iron weights. If you are planning to purchase weights to be used inside your home I recommend these. Rubber encased weight plates are used in the Olympics, typically they come in yellow, green, red & blue colours.
Chrome (Dumbbells) – Chrome dumbbells are made from chrome and are very expensive compared to all other types of dumbbells, however they offer a very good grip and are astatically pleasing.
Bumper Grip (Weights) – Bumper grip weight plates are brilliant because they have sections inside them so you can pick them up easier(unlike cast iron weights).
